The life of Ukrainians is currently full of disturbing and painful events. They did not have time to recover from the COVID-19 epidemic, and the war began. Every day, both adults and children experience stress - a reaction to life situations, news, stories of relatives and friends.

When a person feels fear, anger or excitement, a large amount of the stress hormone - adrenaline is produced in the body. Its significant concentration in the blood accelerates the heartbeat, causes narrowing of blood vessels and dilation of the pupils; a person feels increased panic and increased aggression. The main task in such a situation is to reduce the level of adrenaline in the blood as quickly as possible.

According to psychologists, one of the methods to calm down is to perform breathing exercises where exhalation is longer than inhalation. Among them: whistling, playing wind instruments or blowing soap bubbles.

The "Well-Being Guide" developed by the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies Psychosocial Support Reference Center recommends blowing soap bubbles if an adult or child is worried or nervous. According to the authors of the guide: "Deep breathing is an effective way to calm down, which will provide an opportunity to improve control over the situation to make a decision on how to proceed".

"1. BLOW SOAP BUBBLES
For adults and children around the world, the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic have been a source of stress, anxiety, constant change and uncertainty. Individuals and families were forced to communicate less, children missed school, and we all had to change our habits.

When you feel distressed, a simple breathing exercise can clear your mind and calm you down. Imagining blowing bubbles is the simplest and easiest way for children of all ages to learn deep breathing. Lungs deflate and inflate effortlessly when they want to blow a big bubble Blow a couple of real or imaginary soap bubbles. For children, blowing bubbles is associated with fun, and it keeps them focused on something other than worries and insecurities." (A Guide to Wellbeing: Reduce Stress, Recharge and Build Resilience. IFRC Psychosocial Support Reference Centre, Copenhagen, 2022.)

Remember: in September, children will return to school, and therefore the stress level will increase. Therefore, it is worth taking care of the means of unloading the nervous system.
